With deep love and sorrow, the family of Stephen Mark Matej announces his passing on November 6, 2025, at the age of 74.

Stephen was born on October 19, 1951, and lived a life filled with curiosity and dedication to his family and work. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from SMU in Electrical Engineering and held a State of Texas Teaching Certificate. For over 30 years, he worked as an electrical engineer with Texas Instruments, where his intelligence and problem-solving skills made a lasting impression. Following his engineering career, he discovered a new passion in teaching, sharing his knowledge with students through the State of Texas and at A+ Academy.

Stephen’s warm personality and kind spirit touched everyone he met. He was outgoing, personable, and always ready to lend a hand or share a story. He loved camping, exploring the outdoors, and traveling—especially the many cruises he enjoyed with his loved ones, the most recent of which took place this past July. His loyal dog, Foxy, was never far from his side.

Stephen found joy in simple moments—tinkering in the garage, working on cars, or gathering family together in his home for celebrations and laughter. His proudest moments came from being a father, a teacher, and a source of encouragement to those he loved.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Judi Matej; sister, Becky Woods; brothers, Joe Matej and Vincent Matej; daughter, Vanessa Soto Escalera; sons, Stephen Matej Jr. and Michael Matej; nephews, Christopher Woods, Adam Matej, Andrew Matej, Alex, Garrett, and Ryan; niece, Angela Matej Hill; granddaughters, Lauren Soto, Lexi Escalero, and Hayden Matej; grandsons, Stephen Matej III, Christopher Matej, Lucas Matej, and Matthew Matej; great-nieces, Paige Matej, Abigail Matej, Marina Thusden, Elizabeth Matej, Aubrey Hill, Emery Hill, and Emelynn Matej; great-nephews, Hudson Woods and Logan Matej; stepdaughters, Jackie Byers and Billie Larson; step-grandsons, Dylan Thomas, Levi Luna, Lane Dodson, Justin Cogdill, Eli Byers, Wyatt Byers, and Hunter Byers; and step-granddaughter, Charlie Ward.

Stephen will be remembered for his boundless kindness, sense of humor, and the love he shared so freely. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the SPCA, in honor of Stephen’s love for animals.
